Sleep, or lack of sleep thereof, costs – and costs a lot. It directly impacts our productivity at work, increases the chance for accidents and mistakes, leads to more days off work, not to mention an increase in healthcare utilization costs; but the dimensions of this phenomenon are astonishing; according to Rand, the U.S loses up to $411 billion and around 1.2 million working days annually (!) due to insufficient sleep.
To get a better understanding of how exactly sleep and work impact each other, and to drive awareness of sleep-related solutions as a strong tool for a healthy and vital work environment, we created the great sleep ranking .

We conducted a survey among 825 employees of 25 Fortune 100 companies in the fields of tech, finance and shift-based and asked about their sleep habits, how they perceive their sleep, the way work affect their sleep and vice versa, their opinions about sleep wellness programs and even about their caffeine consumption habits. Here are just some of the fascinating findings we came up with on our way to create a list of the most sleep-friendly organizations. Visit the official survey’s page to get the full results!

Employees don't sleep enough

How many hours do you sleep at night? The Great Sleep Survey reveals a not-so-optimistic trend. On average, employees sleep about 6.5 hours per night, while the recommended amount of sleep for adults is at least 7 hours a night. In the shift sector, workers report the lowest amount of sleep during a typical work week – only 6.1 hours a night on average! This number is particularly worrying when taking into consideration jobs where employees must need to feel refreshed at work, like those who operate heavy machinery, manage clients’ finance or driving as part of their job. Moreover, while high-tech employees report they experience an average of 3.2 nights of quality sleep a week, shift workers settle for only 2.3. On average, all employees claim to experience only 2.4 nights of quality sleep a night. Sleep deprivation is a world-wide epidemic that could have serious consequences and must be taken seriously.

What is most affected by sleep?

Imagine a night of no sleep. You get out of bed and drive to work, feeling groggy and probably aren’t the friendliest person there is; it happens, right? According to employees, their engagement and mood at work are most affected by their sleep. In addition, 22% of respondents believe that their social interactions with their colleagues at work are also affected by their sleep. Considering how little sleep most employees get on a typical work week, we’re probably dealing with too many moody days at work.

If that’s not alarming enough, more than half of respondents strongly believe that poor sleep negatively affects their motivation at work, and two thirds are convinced that they could be more productive at work if they got more or better quality sleep. Employees believe that they don’t perform their best at work because of poor sleep about 2 days on average a week.

Better sleep for better job satisfaction

According to a 2015 study published in the Journal ‘Sleep’, sleep disturbances predicted higher perception of stress, higher work demands, lower degree of control, and less social support at work. The Great Sleep Ranking reveals that employees who are satisfied at work sleep longer, get more quality sleep, experience fewer nights in which their sleep is disrupted due to work related matters, and are overall less sleep deprived. In addition, more satisfied employees experience fewer days of poor performance at work due to sleep deprivation, put themselves at less risk while driving to or from work, and consume less caffeinated beverages to feel more refreshed at work.

The Importance of Sleep Wellness Programs

Companies are incorporating sleep wellness programs to help employees make behavioral and lifestyle changes to improve their health, well-being and overall quality of life. According to our sleep survey, more than two thirds of respondents believe that organizations that offer their employees sleep wellness programs are making a wise investment in its employees and are more attractive than other companies; 75% of respondents in the finance sector say that these companies are perceived as innovative and head of their time; In addition to the derived relationship between satisfaction and sleep, more than half of respondents declare that sleep wellness programs will probably increase their job satisfaction.
